5 Ways to Become Financially Empowered

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Wealth is defined as the value of everyone you own minus any debts. A wealthy person is described as someone who can live comfortably for a least 5 years without working. Not everyone during his or her lifetime may become wealthy but you can become financially empowered. Financially empowered is being in control of your finances, spending your money responsibly, buy needs more often than buying wants, and setting goals for your future.

Here are 5 ways to become financially empowered:

1. Become a homeowner. Becoming a homeowner increases your credit score, proves that your are a responsible spender, provides a tax write-off, increases your financial worth, provides you with an asset that will appreciate over time which will provide you with equity.

2. Buy insurance. Buy health, life and disability insurance. Many people get in debt from medical costs because they do not have life insurance. Life insurance is critical because medical costs increase by 10 to 20% each year. Disability insurance (short-term and long-term) will help you in the event you become seriously ill and have to be off work for an extended period of time. This will help you to recover because you will not have to worry about how your bills will be paid during this time.

3. Start a business. Find out what your passion is, what you love to do more than anything else. You will not become financially empowered by working for someone else unless you were one of the lucky people who bought tons of stock while working at Target, Wal-Mart of AOL. Do your research before starting your business and take baby steps. Start your business in your home; there are many tax write-offs for home based businesses. Once you generate enough income then get a loan to open your own office. Get the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

4. Purchase investment property. All of the financial experts, millionaires and billionaires have talked about it. They all have the same thing in common. They all own investment property. If you are not sure how to begin, do your research, buy two or books on buying investment property, join a real estate group, listen to financial investment shows and find out the best way to get started. Investment property generates cash flow that can be used to generate wealth and allows more opportunities to become available to you.

5. Plan for your retirement. Many Americans today have to work past retirement age because they have no savings or retirement. When a person looks at their life to see what they have accomplished, it is sad to say that they have nothing to show for it. Many still owe money on their homes, don't have any savings and have little or no money in a retirement account. You worked all of your life for what, to pay bills. That is not how life is supposed to be. You should work hard, enjoy life, retire, and then really enjoy life.

Take a Nap to Improve Your Health

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In America, we attach many negative stigmas to the idea of napping. Current research shows that taking afternoon nap has many health benefits.

The old fashion nap has taken on many nicknames from catnapping to power napping. The good news is that if you take afternoon naps, you are in good company because many of the world's greatest minds napped. For example, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Johannes Brahms, John D. Rockefeller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gene Autry, Nikola Tesla, Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, Napoleon Bonaparte, Salvador Dali and Sylvester Stallone valued their afternoon zzz's. -- Just to name a few.

Benefits of Power Napping

* Reduces Stress
* Increases Productivity
* Increases Alertness
* Improves Memory and Learning
* Boosts Creativity
* Promotes Better Judgment and Motivation
* Increases Reaction Time
* Decrease Irritability

The Three Keys to Napping

By observing three key rules, you will gain the full benefits of your afternoon catnap. The keys are the proper length, the proper time, and the proper atmosphere.

Proper Length

Your afternoon siesta should last between 15 to 20 minutes. This length of time gives your body to chance to recharge its engines. Any more than 15 to 20 minutes will let your body slip into the deeper states of sleep therefore causing grogginess. This length of time is enough to gain the benefits of increased alertness and productivity.

Proper Time

The best time of day for napping is about 8 hours after you wake up in the morning and 8 hours before you go to bed at night. This time is perfect to enjoy the restfulness of an afternoon and early enough that it will not make it difficult to sleep at your regular bedtime.

Proper Atmosphere

The right surroundings will aid in you drifting pleasantly off to slumber-land. Make sure that you find a comfortable place for your nap - quite and without disruptions. Also, make sure that the temperature is good for sleeping by adjusting the room temperature or having a blanket available.

Additional Tips

Set an alarm - An alarm is useful so that you will not oversleep.

Take a few deep breaths - A few deep restful breaths will send you off to dream land more quickly.

Create a ritual - Make napping a daily habit so that it's easier to drift off at that time.

Get rid of distractions - Close your door and turn off your cell phone.

Take a few moments to reorient yourself - Don't try to jump up after your power nap and slam your body into high gear. Take a moment to stretch while breathing deeply.

The positive benefits of napping greatly outweigh any of the negative stigmas that our society created towards catnapping. Cast off these stigmas and start to reap the benefits napping today.

A Nation Left Behind Or A Nation Placing Itself Last

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Americans have long taken it for granted that the nation can out produce, out think, and out compete the world market simply because it is America. But consider these historical facts:

•The U.S. only became a world power after the First World War

•The U.S. became a superpower during the Second World War

•The U.S. became the richest nation after WW II, largely because the other plausible competitors for the position—Japan, Germany, and Britain—had been bombed into near oblivion

•With help from the Marshal Plan, the U.S. funded reconstruction of its major competitors. While “made in Japan” was a derogatory comment in the 1950s, it has been a sign of quality since the 1980s

•Many contributors that led the U.S. to global prominence during the post-war years came from the war-ravaged nations: for example, the nuclear and space programs and their spin-off benefits are products of former Italian/German/Nazi scientists (Fermi, Einstein, von Braun)

The U.S. is the only industrialized nation that lacks a united and cohesive k-12 education plan, leaving curriculum, certification, and standards decisions in the hands of state or local school boards. American teachers are so overwhelmed with non-teaching responsibilities (from coaching and CPR classes to monitoring signs of possible abuse and handling disinterested parents) that many jokingly tell friends “…oh, and I also teach a little history.”

Throwing money at schools is not a solution. The schools that have elevated Japan and Germany from dust to second and third richest industrialized countries in less than forty years spent far less per pupil than many, if not most, schools in America. Most people who enter the teaching field do so because they actually believe they can make a difference of the sort that the nation is begging for. As novices, teachers are typically assigned the most difficult classes (in terms of size, discipline problems, and expectations for students), face indifferent or hostile parents, work without collegial help, at laughably low pay that often leads them to taking second jobs. At the very least, teachers should be paid at a rate that allows them to live in the community they serve. And yes, the tenure system should be either greatly revised or discarded. Eliminating higher-paid “deadwood” teachers (those who have ceased caring, or teach outdated materials) would free up funds to pay dedicated teachers without the need to pour more money into an expensive system that could work if it were repaired.

Demographics aren’t destiny. One place to make a course correction is to allow education professionals establish school curricula and standards for passing. In a nation without a central education directive, there is no such thing as an “education president.” Step one, then, is to accept that teachers are professional people, not baby-sitters. Community oversight boards do not tell physicians how to diagnose and treat patients, nor do they tell lawyers how to prepare a case for court. Even Austrian Emperor Josef couldn’t tell Mozart that his opera had “too many notes.” It is time that the lay public stop telling professional educators how to teach.

Alternatively, the U.S. can proceed as it is now doing. In a few more years, China, India, and Japan will need a place to outsource work, to a country with poorly-educated and thus low-paid workers. While that might ensure high employment levels for the next generation of Americans, is that really what we want for the future of our children?

Musical Toys - 5 Cool Musical Toys For Under $20

Image : http://www.flickr.com

1) Baby Einstein Count and Compose Piano - This musical toy over delivers in a big way! While most piano toys for toddlers are push button boring, the count and compose piano offer three distinct modes which will delight and educate kids at the same time. Instrument Key Mode plays the notes of the selected instrument (piano, flute or xylophone) each time a key is pressed. Baby Composer Mode plays a portion of a classical melody in order each time a key is pressed and lets children figure out how the pieces of music go together. Counting Mode teaches children the numbers one through five in English, Spanish and French. Combined with a large screen with flashing lights and a roller drum with rattle balls, this cool musical toy has it all.

2) iPlay Strike-A-Chord Violin - Get children used to holding an instrument early with this musical toy. The violin is made of tough plastic for durability and comes with a bow and a built in stand. Playing 18 pre-recorded songs from the controls at the top as the bow is slid across the "strings", kids will learn rhythm and tempo while they develop their ears for music. Volume control is included along with lights that flash while they play. This toy is perfect for playing along with older siblings as they practice their own instruments.

3) Hasbro Playskool Magic Guitar - Nothing is cooler than a guitar player! Kids will love being the star of the show with this cool musical toy. They can play five pre-recorded tunes by waving their hand over the middle of the guitar. There are two rock and blues tunes as well as versions of "Mary Has A Little Lamb", "Pop Goes The Weasel", and "When The Saints Come Marching In". Kids can even slide the whammy bar back and forth to make guitar sound effects. Hand your child his own guitar and have him play along to CDs, the TV or even with instrument playing parents. Made of tough plastic to withstand the rigors of the rock star life!

4) Melissa & Doug Deluxe Beginner Band Set - Known for their superior quality wooden construction, Melissa & Doug musical toys are built to last. These instruments come in a handy wooden storage box so kids won't misplace the pieces. The set includes a xylophone, a kazoo, a harmonica, castanets, and a jingle stick which functions like a tambourine. Kids can discover new sounds with each instrument while learning rhythm and tempo. Fun for groups of kids to each grab an instrument and try to make their own music. These cool musical toys serve as a nice introduction to the world of playing an instrument.

5) LeapFrog Sing-Along Read-Along - This musical toy may be the coolest of them all! LeapFrog has a well earned reputation for educating while entertaining and this DVD plus storybook set is further proof of it. The DVD has 12 animated music videos that correspond to 12 individual storybooks. Kids follow along reading the books while the videos play. There is singing and dancing and all of the songs are subtitled to encourage reading. There are even little mini-skits which teach individual vowel sounds. The ease and fun of the sing-along read-along motivates children to pursue further reading on their own. And don't worry, the songs aren't the usual annoying, repetitive stuff you get from most children's shows and videos. This cool musical toy lets them laugh, sing and play while learning important reading skills. Very cool!
